Xinjiang

In the summer of 2023, I spent half a month in Xinjiang, China to document the environment and the Uyghurs. Although Xinjiang is governed by Chinese, this land has way more differences than similarities with traditional Chinese. In terms of geography, Xinjiang looks a lot like American West. As for ethnicity, the residents of Xinjiang are mostly the Uyghurs and Kazakhs, who are very unlike Chinese. What's more, Islamic has a huge impact here, while the other parts of China are mostly atheist.

The integration of different civilizations, ethnic groups and religions has made Xinjiang a complex and intriguing place to discover. I found traces showing the relationship between West and East began thousands of years ago, which inspires me to document them.
